NARRATOR
Bob Randall
Region: Coastal Plain
Topics: Community Gardens, Organic Foods, Xeriscape, Farming,
Agriculture
Dr. Randall is a cultural ecologist by training, but has found his calling
since 1988 in building a network of community gardens in the Houston-Galveston
area, first under the auspices of the Interfaith Hunger Coalition
and the Houston Metropolitan Ministries (now known as
Interfaith Ministries for Greater
Houston), and, since 1994, through
the non-profit group, Urban Harvest. In the current network, there
are more than 90 gardens, in a variety of neighborhoods, with a diversity
of purposes, from food gardens for sale to high-end restaurants or
donation to soup kitchens, outdoor classroom gardens for schools,
or fellowship gardens for senior citizen groups. In all their forms,
these gardens have helped develop organic techniques, grow pure food,
connect communities, and create green oases in the city.
