Mr. Smith is president of Local 4-367, within the Paper, Allied-Industrial,
Chemical & Energy Workers International Union (merged with the
United Steel Workers in 2005), and works as an
instrument technician at the
Shell Chemicals Company near Pasadena,
Texas. He has worked on the union/management Health and Safety Committee
since 1985, and has served as its president since 1987. In that role,
he has worked to make Shell and other local refineries and petrochemical
plants safer for workers and neighbors, whether from the immediate
dangers of upsets, explosions and fires, or from the more long-term
risks of low-level toxic chemical exposures.
