Mrs. Hershey is known as a catalyst in Texas conservation circles,
having had a role in forming numerous non-profit groups in Houston and
statewide, including stream protection groups, the
Bayou Preservation
Association and Harris County Flood Control Task Force, a networking
organization, Citizens Environmental Coalition, and a park advocacy
group, The Park People. She has also served on numerous boards,
including those of private sector groups, such as the
National Parks
and Recreation Association, and government agencies, such as the
Texas
Parks and Wildlife Commission. In addition to volunteering her time,
she and her late husband, Jake Hershey, have been instrumental in
financially supporting many small but critical environmental groups
through their foundation, the Jacob and Terese Hershey Foundation.
